The digital revolution has led to the convergence of print, media and all forms of computer-based knowledge management.
Salzburg Research has been at the forefront of this revolution at international level. The European Strategic Objective "Intelligent Content and Semantics" in the Sixth and Seventh EU Framework Programmes has been strongly influenced by the Strategic Study "Electronic Publishing 2010" written by Salzburg Research for the European Commission, in 2003. In EP2010, research into knowledge and content technologies was shown to be a key factor of economic development beyond 2010. Our own conclusion from the study was: to support a future "Knowledge Economy", new technology will be needed at four levels:
- Semantic tools and methods for individual knowledge workers,
- Knowledge-level support for work groups and communities,
- Knowledge services at organisational and corporate level
- Free combination of knowledge and content services for social computing at large scale
The mission of Knowledge-based Information Systems (KIS) at Salzburg Research is to transfer know-how from research into useful applications. The transfer of international research into tangible know-how for the creation of wealth at regional level is of particular importance and therefore, our transfer activities are aimed at innovative small-to-medium enterprises.
